Brain Metastases in Breast Cancer Network Germany

Brain Metastases in Breast Cancer Network Germany

Introduction

The BMBC (Brain Metastases in Breast Cancer Network Germany) registry study is intended to contribute to the prospective and retrospective collection of data on the course of disease in patients with brain metastases from breast cancer. In addition, scientific projects are planned to contribute to a better understanding of the causes of the development of brain metastases in breast cancer.

In the treatment of patients with breast cancer, the increasing incidence of brain metastases (>30%) is a growing problem, as you may also experience in your everyday clinical practice. Unfortunately, knowledge about the mechanisms of this metastasis and the options for treatment are still very limited. The BMBC (Brain Metastases in Breast Cancer Network Germany) registry study is therefore intended to contribute to the prospective and retrospective collection of data on the course of disease in patients with brain metastases from breast cancer in order to gain a better understanding of the biology of cerebral metastasis. The aim of the registry study is, among other things, to record the occurrence, diagnosis and treatment of brain metastases. In addition, scientific projects are planned that will contribute to a better understanding of the causes of the development of brain metastases in breast cancer by examining existing kerosene tissue. This should improve the treatment of our patients in the future.

The registry is run in cooperation with the Department of Gynecology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, AGO-Trafo, AGO-B and the GBG. The documentation effort is manageable and comparable to the "Breast cancer in pregnancy" register, which you may already be familiar with.

Study-Status: open

In July 2023 the 4000th patient was recruited. The patient comes from the center Apaglesion Diakonieklinikum Rotenburg Wümme Klinik für Frauenheilkunde und gynäkologische Onkologie, Elise-Averdieck-Strasse 17, 27356 Rotenburg. Many thanks to Dr. Tobias Hesse and Ms. Svenja Behrens and to the entire study team.

Dr. Elena Laakmann received the Heinrich Maaß Memorial Prize for her research work on brain metastases within the BMBC Registry. It was awarded on February 16, 2019 at the North German Oncology Forum in Hamburg.

Many thanks to all participating trial centers for their commitment!

Please note that in addition to the documentation, the tissue collection carried out as part of the BMBC study is also of great importance to us.
This includes the paraffin blocks of tumor tissue of the primary breast tumor and metastases of various locations. Studies on this material should help us to better understand the mechanisms of metastasis in order to optimize treatment strategies for this form of the disease.
